Akai Ito (赤い糸?) is a popular mobile phone novel written by Mei about two soulmates - junior high school students Mei and Atsushi - who must overcome drugs, rape and attempted suicide in order to be together. The love story was an online hit in 2006 and later published as a series of five books which sold 1.8 million copies.Akai Ito, produced by Shochiku, was released on December 20, 2008 in Japan, while Fuji TV aired the television version on December 6, 2008. The big and small screen versions will both feature the same staff and cast and also carry storylines that are closely connected Nao Minamisawa as Mei and Junpei Mizobata as Atsushi (Akkun).
